On May 8, 2017, EU Commissioner Karmenu Vella awarded the EMAS Award to three EMAS organizations for their initiatives for resource-efficient and efficient business management under the motto "For a strong European cycle management". For Germany, the University of Sustainable Development Eberswalde (HNEE) won in the public administration category and Wiegel Verwaltung GmbH & Co KG received an honorary prize for its commitment.

The 11th EMAS Awards award ceremony took place in Valletta, Malta. Under the motto "For a strong European cycle economy", the European Environment Prize recognizes the actions of EMAS-registered companies and organizations, which contribute in particular to a cycle economy that has a positive impact on the life cycle phases and an economic and social relevance.

The EMAS Award is the most prestigious award for environmental management. The European Commission nominates EMAS organizations, which perform their environmental performance in a special way. Since 2005, the best environmental performance has been awarded in various sectors, so that the focus of the European environmental prize is on a different specific EMAS environmental issue. The prizes are exclusively for organizations from all sectors of industry, services or the public sector with a valid EMAS registration.
